Patients Discontinuing Weight-Loss Jabs Gain Back Pounds Four Times Faster Compared to Those on Conventional Diets

Obesity treatment involves long-term strategies.

A recent study suggests that people who come off new weight-loss injections like Mounjaro or Wegovy tend to recover lost weight at a significantly accelerated pace than those who end conventional diet and exercise plans.

Research printed in a prominent health publication demonstrates that while obese people often shed substantial amounts of their total mass while using the jabs, the mass comes back at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month upon discontinuation.

"People purchasing these medications should be aware of the danger of rapid rebound weight gain when the medication ends," stated researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.

Such speed of recovery means a reversion to starting weight in about a year and a half.

Weighing Therapies

The research, which reviewed dozens of trials involving thousands of patients, compared the results of GLP-1 agonists with conventional dieting.

The team point out that individuals who lose weight through lifestyle changes alone typically experience a slower weight regain—around 0.1 kg a month—once they finish.

Understanding the Fast Regain

Nutrition scientists believe the way of the injections accounts for the accelerated weight return.

GLP-1 drugs mimic a natural hormone called GLP-1, which moderates appetite.

"Artificially providing GLP-1 levels several times higher than normal may cause the body to generate a reduced amount of its own natural hormone, and may also lessen sensitivity to its effects," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics researcher.

"Withdrawal of this GLP-1 'fix' means appetite is no longer kept in check, making binge eating far more likely."

An Ongoing Disease?

The NHS advise the injections for people with weight-linked health risks, accompanied by recommended diet and exercise modifications.

A number of clinicians contend that, considering the significant potential of weight regain, the therapy might need to be long-term.

This opinion is reinforced by drug manufacturers, who say that the results "highlight the chronic character of obesity," akin to managing diseases like high blood pressure.

User Testimonies

Individuals who have stopped the jabs report a powerful return of hunger.

"It felt as if a trigger that goes on and you're instantly ravenous," said one woman.

This difficulty is worsened if individuals have not developed sustainable lifestyle or habit modifications during treatment.

Significant Use

Survey data show that millions of adults in the UK have used these injections in the last 12 months, with demand continuing to grow.

  • Use is higher among women than males.
  • The 40s and 50s demographic shows the greatest level of interest.
  • A large proportion obtain the medications through private prescriptions rather than public health services.

Ultimately, experts stress that while the jabs are powerful agents for shedding pounds, they are not a permanent solution and long-term success likely depends on combined behavioural management.
