Powerful Winds Leave Tens of Thousands In the Dark in the Island Nation

Storm damage in New Zealand
Locals advised to avoid going out as severe gales strike the region.

Powerful gusts reaching velocities of approximately 155km/h (96mph) have caused nearly 90,000 properties experiencing outages and compelled officials to halt more than 100 flights, based on local media.

These gusts are influencing the entire southern region and southern parts of the North Island, as stated by the country's meteorological service.

New Zealand authorities have issued rare high-level wind alerts - the highest alert level - in central regions such as Canterbury and Wellington.

Residents have been advised to avoid going outside, avoid travel, and prepare for more electricity and network failures.

Widespread Impact and Emergency Response

The electricity loss is primarily influencing households predominantly in the southern region, though authorities say that the electricity supply was being gradually reinstated.

Local media have reported that in certain areas homes have lost their roofs, whereas power lines and trees have been brought down by the gusts.

In Wellington, a person was fatally injured after being struck by a falling limb at a frequent walking route on Tuesday.

Also in the capital, a female was pushed toward moving cars on a street by a strong gust of wind, in a event that was captured in a popular vehicle recording.

Flights in and out of the urban area have been cancelled because of the winds, while some roads and libraries are also closed.

Simultaneously Canterbury officials have announced a crisis declaration, to support recovery activities.

Strike Action During Harsh Conditions

The wild winds on Thursday come as many of school staff, physicians and civil servants take part in what has been called a "significant labor action", requesting higher wages and enhanced employment terms.

But the extreme weather has compelled them to modify certain arrangements, with several external protests shifted to interior venues or called off.

Comparable winds are affecting the nearby nation, causing a heatwave to the country's outback.

Agencies have declared flame prohibitions for concern about wildfires.
